White And Black People s Influence On American Culture...

Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, a number of demographic, political, and economic changes greatly impacted American culture and society. (Patterson Carney, 2003.) White and black people in America were still segregated and African Americans were treated as inferior (â€Å"BBC - Higher Bitesize History - Race relations between the wars,† n.d.), though they began to fight against discrimination in this period. (â€Å"Jazz Exacerbates Racial Tension,† n.d.) Music both reflected and played a role in the changing attitudes towards race in the US at this time. From the early 1920s until the early 1950s, major and independent record labels labeled records recorded by African American artists as â€Å"Race Records†. (â€Å"‘Race Records’-Definition,† n.d.) The term†¦show more content†¦I will do this by outlining the role of race in American society during the 1920’s, the migration of many African Americans to the North, the creation of â€Å"Race Records† and the way in which Blues music was marketed to African Americans. Then, I will analyse the role of race in the creation and development of Jazz, the attitude towards African Americans in US society as reflected in Jazz music, the tensions between black people, white people and Creoles in New Orleans and the impact this had on the creation of Jazz, and finally discuss the role of race in Vaudeville. Despite slavery being abolished in 1865 and black people in America being legally free, most white Americans still considered African Americans to be inferior. They faced constant discrimination and hostility, and were treated as second-class citizens. (â€Å"BBC - Higher Bitesize History - Race relations between the wars,† n.d.) In the Southern states of America, where the majority of African Americans lived in the early 20th Century, white superiority was enforced and racial discrimination was legal. Southern states introduced laws to keep black people and white people separated and limit African Americans’ rights, and it was virtually impossible for them to challenge segregation. (â€Å"BBC - Higher Bitesize History - Race relations between the wars,† n.d.) The South became a very

Who is to Blame in Romeo and Juliet Essay - 2468 Words

Romeo and Juliet is set in Verona. They are two star crossed lovers from two different families who have been feuding for generations. This is apparent in the line â€Å"The quarrel is between our masters and us their men†. This demonstrates that the play is destined to result in tragedy. The effect that is created on the audience is that the families have been fighting constantly for many years and that it has been passed down from generations to generations. The Montague’s and Capulet’s ancestors were feuding and this fight has carried on over the years. Looking from a social context women were ruled over by men. Women were possessions or baggage. This relates to the play through Capulet and Juliet’s relationship. Capulet tells Juliet†¦show more content†¦An Elizabethan audience would find this engaging as they loved fights which lead on to end in tragedy. In the Elizabethan era this is what their society would have been like. Secondly Tybalt sends a decree for a fight and he kills Mercutio. This is shown by â€Å"I will not budge for no man’s pleasure, I†. This reveals that Mercutio wants to have a fight with Tybalt. Tybalt wants to have a fight with Romeo the most but Mercutio gets in the way. Mercutio feels that he must stand by the Montague’s. He feels he needs to be a true Montague and fight. Romeo retaliates and kills Tybalt in anger and revenge for his friend. This is apparent in the line â€Å"Either thou or I, or both, must go with him. This conveys that Romeo felt he had to get revenge for Mercutio but he really didn’t mean to kill Tybalt and couldn’t believe that he’d actually done it. Thirdly Romeo is banished from Verona for the murder of Tybalt. This is shown by â€Å"And for that offence immediately we do exile him hence†. This implies that Romeo has committed such a terrible crime that he is not even permitted to stay in Verona. This can link to the tragedy of the play because if Romeo just controlled his anger and revenge and didn’t kill Tybalt the Romeo and Juliet would be able to see each other. Romeo can be blamed for the tragedy in this way. Then Capulet forces Juliet into marrying Paris but she doesn’t abide. I know this because he says â€Å"Hang thee young baggage, disobedient wretch!†Show MoreRelatedRomeo and Juliet Who Is to Blame778 Words   |  4 PagesRomeo and Juliet essay The story of Romeo and Juliet is the best tragedy ever to be written. My Personal Perspective Of Counseling - 1121 Words

As I have stated throughout this paper, it is difficult to discern a child’s desire to change verses an adult’s desire for them to change. This applies to goals of counseling as well. In reality, parents, teachers, and administrators determine when counseling has been effective. Typically children in schools are referred to counseling for externalizing behavior, these behaviors can be easily measured and tracked. Counseling is considered effective when the behavior of referral has decreased. All expenditures in a school have to be justified, demonstrating a change in externalizing behaviors is one way to do this. From my personal perspective, counseling is effective when a child has increased awareness of why they engage in a behavior. Counseling in schools often focuses on decreasing a behavior, not assisting the child in identifying why they engage in behavior. I also think counseling is effective when a child has greater self-acceptance and personal agency. As I have reiterated, I think change occurs by modifying cognitions and developing a more robust narrative. An effective therapist helps a child develop a meaningful narrative, and modifies maladaptive assumptions. I think the concept of becoming one’s own therapist is important with children. I want to give children the tools to maintain change. The Aztec Indians, Who Are Known For Their Essays (488 words)

The Aztec Indians, who are known for their domination of southern and central Mexico, ruled between the 14th and 16th centuries. Their name is derived from Azatlan, the homeland of the north. The Aztecs also call themselves Mexica and there language came from the Nahuatlan branch of the Uto-Aztecan family. The Aztecs were formed after the Toltec civilization occurred when hundreds of civilians came towards Lake texcoco. Late families were unfortunate and were forced to go to the swamp lands. In the swamp lands there was only one piece of land to farm on and it was totally surrounded by more marshes . The Aztec families some how converted these disadvantages to a might empire known as they Aztec Empire. People say the empire was partially formed by a deeply believed legend. As the the legend went it said that Aztec people would create a empire on in a swampy place where they would see an eagle eating a snake while perched on a cactus which is growing out of a rock in the swamplands. This is what priests claimed they saw while entering the new land. By the year 1325 Their capital city was finished. They called it Tenochtitlan. In the the capital city aqueducts (piping) were constructed, bridges were built, and chinapas were made. Chinapas were little islands formed by pilled up mud. On these chinapas Aztecs grew corn, beans, chili peppers, squash, tomatoes, and tobacco. Tenochtitlan (the capital city) was covered in giant religious statues in order to pay their respects to the gods. In the Aztec religion numerous gods controlled an Aztec's daily life. Some of these gods include: Uitzilpochtli (the sun god), Coyolxauhqui (the moon goddess), Tlaloc (the rain god), and Quetzalcoatl (the inventor of the calendar and writing). Another part of the Aztec religion was human sacrifices. For their sacrifices the priest would lay the man or woman over a convex (rounded) stone, then he would take a sharp knife and cut the victims heart out. They did this because they believed that good gods could prevent bad gods from doing evil things and they also believed that good gods got their strength from human blood and hearts so they had sacrifices in order to keep their gods strong. For major rituals warriors were sacrificed, for the warrior this was one of the greatest honors and for minor rituals prisoners were used. In an Aztec marriage the grooms shirt is tied to the brides dress in order to express there bonding and after the wedding incents were burned for 4 days before proceeding with the marriage. In 1519 Hernando Cortes, a Spanish explorer, led over 500 men into Aztec territory to search for gold. Aztecs thought he was a representative for a certain white skinned god so they respected him. It all changed when the Aztecs saw that Hernando was melting down their golden statues and shipping them back to Spain. The Aztecs decided to attack Hernando and his men. The Aztecs were successful and drove the Spanish away. In 1520 the Spanish attacked the Aztec's capital city and destroyed their civilization. That was the end of the Aztec's mighty empire had built so long ago.

Pepsi Coke Challenge Lab Report Essays

Pepsi Coke Challenge Lab Report Essays Pepsi Coke Challenge Lab Report Paper Pepsi Coke Challenge Lab Report Paper The second one was hat there is no difference between brushing your teeth and not brushing your teeth, within the last thirty minutes, in their ability to distinguish between Pepsi and Coke. After doing the test and performing the necessary calculations on the chi-squared test, I found out that a greater amount of people who brushed were able to correctly identify the cola products. INTRODUCTION: If you were given a blind taste test and asked to distinguish between two products, how confident do you think you are in telling the products apart? In my Biology 141 class, we did the Pepsi/Coke Challenge and that challenge was simply about vying individuals a blind taste test, and asking them to distinguish between Pepsi and Coke. There are many reasons why reasons people perform blind test. These test can be sent, smell, feel or taste. In marketing, a blind taste test is used as a tool for companies to see how they can improve their product. It is also used as a tool for companies to develop their brand. For example, many restaurants select random people to taste their food, so that they would know which dish needs more improvement. The results of these tests are not always the same. This is because there are some people who may use those products very frequently, so they are more likely to tell the difference between the two products. On the other hand there are those people rarely use the product, so they will have a harder time distinguishing between the product and they are more likely to get it wrong. Then there are those people who are stuck between the two extremes who uses the product often enough, but they are unsure. However, I know that brushing your teeth and drinking or eating right after causes whatever you are eating or drinking to taste funny. Knowing this, the question I ask is, Is there a difference between brushing your teeth and not brushing your teeth, within the last thirty minutes, affect their ability to distinguish between the Cola products Pepsi and Coke? HI : There is a difference between brushing your teeth and not brushing your teeth, within the last thirty minutes, in their ability to distinguish between Pepsi and Coke. H2O: There is no difference between brushing your teeth and not brushing your teeth, within the last thirty minutes, in their ability to distinguish between Pepsi and Coke. If there is a difference between brushing your teeth and not brushing your and Coke, then there will be a difference in the percent that each group correctly identifies the colas in a blind test. METHODS: In order to get accurate results in our Pepsi/Coke Challenge blind test, the Biology 141 class disguised each can by wrapping aluminum foil over the entire can. We then decided to only ask fifteen students who attend the University of the Virgin Island on SST. Thomas campus to participate in our challenge. Before leaving the lab, the class was split into two groups, Comparison or Single Cola (which was Pepsi). The Comparison group gathered thirty cups, so that the participants wouldnt reuse the same cup and alter the taste by mixing the two products, fifteen questionnaire forms, an ice bag, ice three Coke cans and three Pepsi cans. The Single Cola group gathered fifteen cups, fifteen questionnaire forms, an ice bag, ice, and three Pepsi cans. We placed the cans that werent being used as yet into the ice bag until the one can being used was empty. Before giving the students the products to taste, we had them fill out the questionnaire that had questions such as, Did you take this test today? Have you eaten anything recently? Have you brushed your teeth within the last thirsty minutes? Which cola product do you like best out of Pepsi and Coke? How confident are you in distinguishing between the two cola products? If any student reported that they had taken the report earlier that day, we eliminated them and selected someone else who hadnt to fill their position. After asking the fifteen students, we then went back to the lab to record our finding on a spreadsheet. RESULTS: For our Pepsi/Coke Challenge, there were two hundred and thirty six people who did the test. Of he two hundred and thirty six people, fifty six people who brushed and seventy people who didnt brush identified the Cola products correctly. Everyone in the people who brushed section correctly identified the product, but one hundred and ten people in the didnt brush section got the test wrong. This represents 100% of the people who did brush and 38% of the people who didnt brush. After performing a Chi Square test, we saw that there was a greater percentage of people who couldve identified the product were the ones who brushed (SD 64. 1, chi-square = 3. 841, 1 degree of freedom). Figurer: A greater percent of people who brushed correctly identified the products. DISCUSSION: A greater amount of people who brushed were able to correctly identify the cola products. From the values given from the chi- squared test, this implicates that there is a difference between brushing your teeth and not brushing your teeth, within the last thirty minutes, in their ability to distinguish between Pepsi and Coke. Knowing this, I know that my second hypothesis, There is no difference , is incorrect and can be eliminated. The differences found in this test may be that the people who brushed may eave a cleaner mouth so they were more capable to tell which product was Pepsi and which one was coke. Most participants were able to tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi because they probably drink these cola products frequently. There were other people who knew the difference because they only drank Coke since they did not like the taste of Pepsi and vice-versa. Other people were able to tell the difference just by smelling it because they said that Pepsi had a sweeter scent. Since we only tested VI students, the results may vary if we were to do this challenge on another set of individuals.
